Beacon Hub project update

The golf kiosk - artist's impression of before and redevelopment

The golf kiosk – artist’s impression of before and after redevelopment

To dispel rumours circulating that it is the intention of the Beacon Hub project to turn the Rottingdean pitch and putt course into some kind of ‘eco theme park’ somewhere between Disneyland and the Eden Project, the above shows how the modest redevelopment proposed might effect the outward appearance. It is intended that a significant proportion of the land will be retained for recreational use (dog walking, kite flying etc) by keeping the grass shorter than the reserve proper. The idea of a ‘sculpture trail’ has also been mooted.
Our next stage proposal is being presented to the City council next week – fingers crossed that they see fit to award the project the lease and allow the building to be redeveloped for the benefit of local children in particular.

Just to say that I hope the big nature conservation and countryside organisations support the idea for a centre which (I hope ) will attract ramblers, families, tourists and any other groups interested in the preservation of Downland habitats and walking. This is the perfect location being close to the coast and just outside and beyond the attractions of Brighton City Centre and Brighton Marina. I am excited by the potential that this could bring to promoting greater interest in countryside and Downland / coastal habitats. However I still feel that the building needs pulling down so that a more substantial internal space could be created to include exhibition space, classroom and refreshment facilities. This is why I would like to see funding from large nature/countryside organisations who could work with Brighton City Council and Rottingdean Parish Council to create a long lasting and viable facility that will become a major environmental attraction to the south coast..
