Road closures in Ovingdean : Monday 7 September – Saturday 12 September 2015

These are the full details from the council

We will be undertaking major re-surfacing works on the A259 from Monday 7th September until Saturday 12th September inclusive. This work involves the implementation of large scale traffic management measures on this busy road that may result in additional delays on this already congested carriageway.

The works involve removal of the existing carriageway surface to a depth of 100mm and relaying two layers of bituminous surfacing material. The re-surfacing works extend from a point approximately 200m west of the Ovingdean Roundabout , through the roundabout and East to the start of the existing eastbound bus lane ( approx. 100m ).

Due to it’s isolated position it is impractical to undertake letter drops regarding this work and therefore we have installed variable message boards on site already to give motorists advance warning of the works and have signs in Greenways stating the road will be closed from the 7th to the 12th September.

We will be installing additional direction signs around the area next week in Falmer Road and on the A259 and will be providing signed diversions for Ovingdean during the works.

I have had discussions with the Big Lemon Bus Company and it would be very difficult to maintain a reliable bus service for the residents of Ovingdean due to the closure of Greenways. As such we have arranged for a shuttle service to run round Ovingdean during the works period, which will link up with the normal bus service which will be using Falmer Road diversion, this ensures a reliable service to the village is maintained.

Details of the traffic management proposals are as follows

On 7th, 8th and 9th September

The east bound carriageway will be excavated and resurfaced.
All traffic will be running on a two way, single lane contraflow between Roedean Road and Rottingdean.
A 30mph speed limit will be introduced throughout the traffic management area.
Greenways will be closed at it’s junction with A259 Marine Drive Ovingdean Roundabout.
The East bound bus stop at the roundabout will be difficult to access and a temporary stop may be required at the start of the bus lane itself.
The Westbound stop at the roundabout will be unaffected.

On the 10th, 11th and 12th September

The west bound carriageway will be excavated and resurfaced.
All traffic will be running on two way, single lane contraflow between Roedean Road and Rottingdean.
A 30mph speed limit will be introduced throughout the traffic management area.
Greenways will be closed at it’s junction with A259 Marine Drive Ovingdean Roundabout.
The East bound bus stop at the roundabout will be unaffected.
The Westbound stop at the roundabout will not be accessible. It will be possible to provide a temporary stop on the approach to the works opposite the existing eastbound stop if that is OK.

All traffic into and out of Ovingdean will be diverted via Falmer Road and Ovingdean Road.

PLEASE NOTE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IS IN PLACE 24hrs EACH DAY FOR FULL DURATION OF THE WORKS

I am anticipating there may be several enquiries about the works due to the wide catchment area that utilises this route and details will be put on the Councils Web Site and a press release has been prepared.
